Years ago, I was unfamiliar with merchant services. I did not even know what the credit card terminal was. Like most consumers, I thought that the bank took care of the entire procedure once the credit card had been swiped.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
The truth is that the bank has very little, if anything, to do with the processing. In most cases, the bank has an established relationship with an Independent Sales Organization (ISO) or an acquirer and only sends a referral. The ISO takes it from there – the application, the programming of the terminal and the customer service. The only thing that the bank does is make money on the referral.
